Modern Foreign Languages

Welcome! Bienvenue! Willkommen! Benvenuti! Bienvenida!

We celebrate diversity at Barnsbury. Between us, we speak over 30 different languages! These include Russian, Tagolog, Hungarian, Farsi, Urdu and many more. We have a lot to learn from each other.

Pupils from year 1 to year 6 have weekly language lessons. Children from year 1-5 learn French through songs, stories and interactive lessons. Year 2 children also explore some other languages, including Mandarin, during the Spring term. After their grounding in French, pupils learn German for their final year at Barnsbury. This will help them when they make choices about language learning at secondary school.

Barnsbury Twinning News!

Barnsbury has officially joined the Woking Town Twinning Association (WTTA) and has begun an exciting link with HenriWallonSchool in the French town of Le Plessis-Robinson! Year 4 pupils are exchanging letters with their pen friends at HenriWallonSchool

Year 4 are not the only children to enjoy links with schools in other countries: Year 5 pupils have exchanged videos with the French school École Bleriot in Tergnier and Year 6 pupils have exchanged letters with the German school Oberschule Ronzelenstrasse in Bremen!  We are delighted that our pupils have these opportunities, which give language learning a genuine focus.

Understanding other people in our world is important to us. We appreciate the different festivals people celebrate, the variety of food people eat, the stories they tell and the things they value. These learning opportunities are often embedded in our topics and celebrated in International Week.

We welcome visitors from other countries to our school. During International Week, we welcome parents into our classes to read stories in other languages. If you have another language or culture that you would like to share with us, do let us know – you would be very welcome.
